Artists from Germany and Malawi have teamed up in a dance project called Katharsis Tonthola, which was developed through the Blantyre-Hannover cities.
Katharsis Tonthola’s production manager, Jack Musumba, the production is an improvised contemporary dance work featuring live music and movement to explore the idea of ‘katharsis’ emotional release and purification through performance.

He said: “We have prepared a unique dance production that will offer patrons an unforgettable experience at the Easter Theatre Festival.
“This will be one of the first improvisational contemporary dance productions of its kind in Malawi, bringing together highly experienced choreographers and dancers from Germany alongside Malawian artists.”
Musumba said the performance presents a natural blend of contemporary dance and live music that combines Malawian and European musical influences to create a rich cross-cultural soundscape.
“This collaboration continues to benefit Malawian dancers and musicians by providing opportunities for learning performance and international exposure. It also helps them expand their professional network and engage in meangful artistic exchange,” he said.
Some of the local names involved in the project are Robert Magasa, Joshua Bhima, Agorosso Lloyd Phaundi, Shandoflex and Zaheera Mussah.
One of the local dancers Magasa said patrons can expect an immersive and dynamic performance rooted in lve improvisation, where dance and music are created in real time.
“Each moment is shaped by interaction, making every performance unique and unrepeatable. What distinguishes this work is its foundation in cultural exchange, bringing together diverse artistic traditions in an unscripted dialogue,” he said.
Easter Theatre Festival is expected to start today until Sunday March 29 at Portuguiese Club in Blantyre.
